A number of years ago , I flipped furniture as a hobby while I was a stay at home mom.. I named the business Ellie Fintz Attic in honor of my Maternal Grandmother Ellie, who taught me from a very early age that one mans trash is another mans treasure. I'll never forget coming home from one of our excursions with an old blue plaid umbrella with the most ornate carved handle. My mother thought we were crazy, but I just loved it. Ellie was one in a million and her and my grandfather Ed (who lovingly called me Marilyn,) raised 7 grateful children. All of whom have hearts of gold and have taught me what the word "family" truly means. Nanny York would constantly amaze me with her outragous stories and larger than life personality. This is how my roadside redemptions journey began. Thank you Nanny and Grampy, I'll love you and miss you forever.
So what happened to Ellie Fintz Attic you might ask? Well, unfortunately it cost more to ship my furniture pieces than what I was selling the pieces for, so it never really got off the ground. Very soon after that I went through a divorce and went back to a full time job to keep food on the table. Such is life....
Fortunately I was blessed with my amazing family. I was lucky to have an aunt and uncle who offered to hold onto all the furniture I didn't have a chance to yet flip, and stored it for me until I could decide what to do with it all. After my divorce I legally changed my last name to my mother maiden name YORK. A name that my whole life represented what it meant to be FAMILY.
Six years later, after a broken 2 yr engagement, I found myself starting my life all over again. I just happened to be at my aunt and uncles house while trying to decide what was next for me. I was burnt out and feeling completely broken, and I was in desperate need of a complete life overhaul. This is when and where York Design began to take shape. I spent the next number of months working on myself and my furniture in solitude, and rediscovering who I am. I learned to love being alone with my thoughts and challenging myself with what I am and what I'm not comfortable with as a person. I learned it was ok to say "that's not ok with me". I reconnected with the much younger, happier, full of life girl, I used to be. I found my voice again and began to feel the confindence I'd been missing for far too many years. I've lost my fear of being judged . I found people who really listen to my words and appreciate me for me . People who love my honestly and my heart. I love to be creative, I am passionitly curious, I love to meet new people and learn new things . I now feel stronger and at peace with my own decisions, and at the end of the day I was able, to find me. It's been a hard road, but very much worth the trouble.
My business is just starting to take off. I now have a number of my pieces for sale at a wonderful shop in Savannah called Vendors on Victory, located in the Victory Drive Shopping Plaza. Booth # 33. I also list and sell my pieces on my York Design Facebook page as well as on Facebook Market Place. (Details can be found on my contact page).
I do offer custom work and commissioned pieces. So if you have something you are itching to revamp, or just need some suggestions on what direction to take the piece, give me a call or email me, I'd love to help.
I'm also planning on starting some classes at various locations to teach techniques and other furniture makeover skills. If there's something you would like to learn let me know what it is.
